Whenever a “mass” (lump) is detected inside the chest of a patient by chest X-Ray, Ultrasound, CT scan numerous diagnoses are possible. These range from simple infections to Tuberculosis, fungal infection and various types of tumours including cancer.
Many times differentiation between these diagnoses is possible even after all possible scans. A tissue diagnosis is the gold standard the same can be achieved by taking a piece from the mass by putting a needle into it using ultrasound or CT scan guidance. It is done by the radiologist in the radiology suite.
The tissue obtained is sent for biopsy test to the pathology department for final diagnosis. This helps in starting specific treatment.
